Chatswood Local History
Chatswood is a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is located 10 kilometers north of Sydney's central business district and is part of the local government areas of the City of Willoughby and the Municipality of Lane Cove.
The suburb was named after Richard Hayes Harnett's “Chatswood” estate, which was named in 1876 in honor of his childhood home in England. In the late 1800s, Chatswood started to become a popular residential location due to the construction of the Northern railway line. The area continued to develop and grow until becoming a suburb in 1920.
Chatswood boasts a rich history filled with interesting stories and characters from its past.
